Every team is scored by our own Elo model, which weighs who won, by how much, where the game was played and how good the opponent was, then adds recent form and box score efficiency. The table refreshes after every game, and each Tuesday morning the order is locked in as that week’s official edition.

How Our 2026 NFL Power Rankings Work
Each team carries an Elo rating, a number that goes up after a win and down after a loss. Beating a strong team on the road moves the number a lot. Beating a weak team at home barely moves it. Winning by 30 counts for more than winning by 3, but not ten times more, so one blowout cannot hijack the order.
The final ranking uses a 0 to 100 PRT Score built from three parts:
| Part | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Elo rating | 55% | Overall strength, built from every result |
| Recent form | 20% | Rating change over the last four games |
| Efficiency | 25% | Yards per play gained and allowed, scoring margin, third downs and turnovers |
Home field is worth 55 Elo points, roughly two points on the scoreboard. Every team started the 2026 season from its final 2025 rating, pulled a quarter of the way back toward league average. Strong teams keep some credit, but nobody coasts on last year for long.
Efficiency comes from the box score of every game. Net yards per play carries the most weight because it predicts future results better than the scoreboard does. Turnovers carry the least, since they swing a lot from week to week. That is how a 6-0 team that wins close games on defense can rank behind a 4-3 team that moves the ball far better than its opponents. Every formula, weight and limit is in the full methodology.
What the Tiers Mean
| Tier | PRT Score | What it says about a team |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Title Contenders | 70 and up | Playing at a Super Bowl level right now |
| 2. Playoff Teams | 60 to 69.9 | Good enough to make the playoffs and win a game there |
| 3. In the Hunt | 50 to 59.9 | Around league average, the wild card bubble |
| 4. Need a Run | 40 to 49.9 | Below average, need a hot streak to stay alive |
| 5. Long Shots | Under 40 | Out of the race on current form |
Power Rankings vs. NFL Standings
Standings only count wins, losses and tiebreakers. Power rankings ask a different question: if two teams played tomorrow on a neutral field, who should win? That is why a 5-1 team can sit behind a 4-3 team that has faced a much harder schedule and lost close games.
NFL Power Rankings FAQ
What are NFL power rankings?
NFL power rankings order all 32 teams from strongest to weakest at a given point in the season. Unlike the standings, they account for strength of schedule, margin of victory and recent form.
How often are these rankings updated?
The table updates automatically after every game. Each Tuesday morning, after Monday Night Football, the order is saved as that week’s official edition.
What is the PRT Score?
The PRT Score is a 0 to 100 rating that blends a team’s Elo rating, its form over the last four games and its efficiency, led by net yards per play. Higher is better.
What do the tiers mean?
Tiers group teams by PRT Score. Title Contenders score 70 and up, Playoff Teams 60 to 69.9, In the Hunt 50 to 59.9, Need a Run 40 to 49.9 and Long Shots under 40.
What is an Elo rating?
Elo is a rating system first built for chess. In the NFL, every team starts near 1500. Wins raise the number and losses lower it, with bigger swings for upsets and lopsided scores.
Why is a team with a better record ranked lower?
Usually because its wins came against weak opponents or by narrow margins, or because it gains fewer yards per play than it allows. The note under each team in the table explains its spot.
Do power rankings predict the Super Bowl winner?
Not directly. They measure how strong each team is today. Injuries, remaining schedule and playoff seeding still decide who lifts the trophy in February.
Where does the game data come from?
Scores, schedules and box scores come from a licensed live sports data feed. The ratings themselves are calculated by Power Rankings Today and are not copied from any other site.
Check back after every game. These NFL power rankings refresh on their own, and each weekly edition is saved, so you can follow how every team’s rating moves through the 2026 season.
